Feeding our oats

Our oats may looked stripped down, but they're really pumped up -- with 20 to 30 percent more calories per pound than conventional oats. That means picky eaters get more energy with every mouthful. Or, to look at it another way, you can get the same amount of energy into your horse using less feed. That means a reduced risk of colic, founder, or other conditions associated with a high carb diet.

How should you feed hulless oats? Our chart below gives feeding recommendations for high quality hay, hulless oats, and supplements. Ranges are given to accommodate different temperaments and digestive efficiencies among horses. Use the lower amount for easy keepers, and the higher amount for more active, hard-keeping horses.

Hulless oats contain more digestible energy per pound than conventional, hulled oats. When replacing conventional oats with hulless oats, feed 1/4 less. For example, if a horse received 10 lbs. of conventional oats per day, feed only 7.5 lbs of hulless oats.

Don't forget, to introduce hulless oats gradually over 7 to 10 days. All horses should have free access to water and salt. The chart below shows the amount of hulless oats to feed with grass OR alfalfa hay depending on your horse's age and activity level. The chart shows amounts to feed a horse with a mature weight of 1000 pounds. If your horse weighs more or less, adjust the amounts accordingly.
